11 - Town Hall conversation on the California Green Chemistry Initiative

John Warner, john_warner@uml.edu, School of Health & Environment, University of Massachusettes, Lowell, MA 01854, United States

In the spring of 2007, California began an unprecedented effort to reduce toxic chemicals in products and to promote the development and use of safer chemicals in the state's industries. The resulting Green Chemistry Initiative has already led to legislation authorizing the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to identify and prioritize chemicals of concern, evaluate alternatives, and specify regulatory responses. In developing the specific rules required by that legislation, DTSC has worked to get multi-stakeholder input online and in public workshops under the broad moniker “Conversation with California.” A draft rule is expected in February 2010, and this panel will be an opportunity to discuss the initiative with DTSC and ACS members who have been engaged and played advisory roles in the initiative.
