44 - What patent searchers need to know from patent attorneys

What Patent Searcher Michael D Mullican PhD Department of Science IP, Chemical Abstracts Service, Columbus, OH, United States

A burning question that is (or should be) on the mind of every patent practitioner (attorney or agent) is: "What do patent searchers want?" Among other things, the searcher wants to know "What does the practitioner really need?" and "What search tactics will I use to meet those needs?"

Terms like patentability, freedom-to-operate, validity, and landscape are useful for conveying what information is needed for a search. However, many times these terms do not convey everything a patent practitioner needs in a search. On occasion, they do not convey at all what the practitioner really wants.

The presentation will cover what a patent searcher needs to know and what tactics and tools are at the searcher's disposal to execute a successful search. This information will help the patent practitioner get the best search results. Search examples will favor chemical and pharmaceutical searches.
