826 - Metallacrowns: Novel a-hydroxy hydroxamic acid ligands and the application of thermogravimetric analysis to metallacrowns

Metallacrowns, a unique group of inorganic cluster complexes, form with rings of metal and non-metal atoms at their cores. These rings typically contain repeating units, and if hydroxamic acids are used to synthesize the metallacrown, that repeat is -(M-N-O)-. Metallacrowns have been suggested for a range of uses from building blocks for extended solids to sensors. This work is predicated on preparing metallacrowns derived from a-amino hydroxamic acid and related a-hydroxy hydroxamic acid ligands. The latter set of ligands is being developed and expanded by work in this laboratory. Only one report of an a-hydroxy hydroxamic acid based metallacrown exists: L-mandelohydroxamic acid. The target ligands in this work are L-3-phenyllactohydroxamic acid and glycolohydroxamic acid. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of metallacrown families is the other research emphasis that will be presented. Extended solids based on metallacrowns will require analysis by techniques like TGA. Results from our recent efforts will be described.
